'Game Of Thrones' Showrunner Says Show May End Up Spoiling George R. R. Martin's Upcoming Book

As "Game Of Thrones" heads into its sixth season next month, diehard fans are seeing what they long feared could start happening — the hit HBO show is now starting to outpace the narrative set forth in George R. R. Martin‘s books. If you’re a fan of the novels and prefer to dive into the world of GOT on the page, be aware that the stories might start appearing on screen first. And speaking at the Oxford Union recently, showrunner David Benioff suggested there will be no way to avoid spoilers from Martin’s yet-to-be-published entries in his book series.

"Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading. And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going; there might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading toward the same destination," Benioff said (via Esquire UK). "I kind of wish that there were some things we didn’t have to spoil, but we’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The show must go on… and that’s what we’re going to do."

So, what’s Martin’s progress on his next book, "The Winds Of Winter"? He’s really trying to get it finished. In fact, he recently wrote on his blog that he’s skipping the World Fantasy Convention and San Diego Comic-Con to focus on finishing the book. However, he does add an interesting caveat: "Should I complete and deliver ‘Winds Of Winter’ before these cons roll round, I reserve the right to change my mind." So maybe Martin is close to completion?
