Gavin O’Connor Heads To Netflix For 'Seven Seconds' From ‘The Killing’ Creator Veena Sud

While no one actually knows for sure, the word around the digital campfire the past couple of days is that Netflix has quietly cut back on licensed programming by 50% over the past four years. The theory is that with their continued push to create their own TV shows and films, paying to license somebody else’s catalog of material is less attractive. Again, since Netflix doesn’t share their data on anything, it’s speculation at this point, but there’s no doubt that the streaming giant is eager to continue making their own content. And they’ve got another intriguing show in the pipeline.

Making the rounds for next week’s “The Accountant,” director Gavin O’Connor revealed he’ll be doing some work for Netflix, helming the pilot for what sounds like a very promising new drama that has already been ordered straight to series.

“[The show’s name is] ‘Seven Seconds.’ We haven’t even started casting it yet. It hasn’t been announced yet. I just signed on like a week ago,” he told Collider. “It’s a drama that takes place in a post-Ferguson world in Jersey City. Politics, corruption, community, police. The creator is a woman named Veena Sud, who did ‘The Killing.’ This is her new show.”

Politics, corruption, community, police — frankly, sounds like something we’d expect from David Simon, but no doubt Sud has her own spin on things, and we’re eager to see what she brings to her next series.

O’Connor will be directing the pilot and, he hopes, the finale of the first season as well, and he adds that the show will likely run for three seasons. There’s nothing official just yet, but it sounds like an announcement will be made soon, and it’s probably a safe bet “Seven Seconds” will arrive next year on Netflix.
