George Clooney’s track record as a director is hit or miss. While he’s an A-lister actor, with numerous hits under his belt, when he steps behind the camera, things are a bit more…dicey. Last year, he released “Suburbicon,” which had all the makings of a great film, but ended up not doing much for audiences and critics. It feels like it’s been an eternity since 2002’s “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” put him on the map as a filmmaker to keep an eye on. Perhaps, his next film will bring back the glory days of Clooney’s filmmaking.
Deadline is reporting that Clooney is about to helm his next film, and this time the director is taking on a new genre – sci-fi. The film, titled “Echo,” tells the story of a drone specialist who believes that his lover has been replaced and is not who she says she is. “Echo” is produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen. Those are the gentlemen responsible for “Arrival,” “Stranger Things,” and the upcoming “Kin” and “Darkest Minds.”
The film is written by Christopher MacBride, who is a writer-director known for his film “The Conspiracy” and the upcoming “The Education of Fredrick Fitzell,” which is slated to star Dylan O’Brien and Maika Monroe.
No word on who Clooney might approach to star in this film. However, he’s been known to step in front of the camera for his own films, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to see him star in the film as well. But if he chooses not to do that, the Rolodex (do people still use those?) on Clooney’s desk is filled with the names of just about every A-list actor in Hollywood.
If you can’t wait for “Echo,” then make sure to check out Clooney’s skill as a director on the first episode of his Hulu series “Catch-22.”
