‘Game of Thrones‘ author George R. R. Martin just signed a five-year overall deal with HBO to develop all kinds of content for the network, so if you still have any hope that “The Winds of Winter” will get finished anytime soon, better think again.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop on Martin’s massive deal with HBO, which is said to span five years and is worth mid-eight figures. The news on this new content deal comes on the heels of yet another announcement for more “Game of Thrones” prequels being in development. As of now, there are five different projects based on Martin’s fantasy world in different stages of development, as well as “House of the Dragon” which has already been greenlit and continues to add to its cast.
It’s a pretty smart move on HBO’s part to try and keep the source of their most successful and most-award-winning show ever making more content for them. It’s unclear at the moment how many of the projects that will span from this deal will be “Game of Thrones” related if any. That being said, this deal positions Martin in a key creative role in the future of HBO, which likely means that the network is betting on genre shows as a strong part of their output, which can only be good news for fans of sci-fi and fantasy TV.
George R. R. Martin already other shows in development at HBO before signing the deal, including “Who Fears Death,” an adaptation of Nnedi Okorafor‘s award-winning postapocalyptic novel, and an adaptation of Roger Zelazny‘s fantasy novel “Roadmarks.” Martin is executive producing both projects. Outside of HBO, Martin is also working on the anthology “Wild Cards” for Peacock, and a feature film based on his short stories “In the Lost Lands” which Paul W.S. Anderson is set to direct.
