‘Geostorm’ May Crumble With $100 Million Loss

Well, we all had a good laugh at “Geostorm,” Gerard Butler‘s cornball enviro-thriller which opened last week, alongside another turd in “The Snowman,” with both films already prepared for multiple year end Worst lists. However, for the folks at Warner Bros., the film’s failure is a serious matter, especially considering the amount of money they threw at it to make it work.

According to The Wrap, “Geostorm” could stand to lose nearly $100 million. Astoundingly, the studio spent $120 million on this turkey, yes, a movie where Gerard Butler plays an engineer who has to fix satellite systems that control the weather, after they’ve been hacked, and start causing extreme geostorms everywhere. Somewhere on the Warner Bros. lot, executives agreed this was a movie they should make (to be fair, Skydance partnered with them on it, but seriously, everyone probably should’ve known better). At any rate, with marketing factors thrown in, “Geostorm” needs to make $300-350 million to break even, and with only $66 million worldwide so far, that’s probably not gonna happen.

So, what does this mean for Gerard Butler? Well, he’s not leading tentpole movies again anytime soon, and he’s already been downgraded to making dumb action flicks with 50 Cent. Meanwhile, Dean Devlin, making his directorial debut, likely won’t be behind the camera again anytime soon, unless he makes some kind of indie flick. It would seem that true disaster in “Geostorm” was the movie itself.
