“La La Land” might have lost the Oscar for Best Picture, but the $436 million global blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone had to be a shoo- in for the MTV Movie Awards, right? Nope. MTV announced the nominees for the inaugural MTV Movie & TV Awards today and Damien Chazelle‘s movie musical was relegated to a single Best Kiss nomination. Granted, the MTV Movie Awards have always been promoted as an alternative to traditional awards shows, but even with the addition of TV categories this crop of nominees was slightly head scratching.
Realizing it’s an opportunity for even more popular stars to walk the red carpet and be forever enshrined as social media gifs, MTV has added predictable TV categories such as Show of the Year and Best Reality Competition to its nominations list. For the most part however, the additional contenders means that mixed categories such as Best Villain, Tearjerker and Best American Story, will include both movie and television nominees. There are, strangely, two reality awards (Best Reality Competition and Best Reality Host) and honors such as Best Fight Against The System (“Luke Cage,” really?) and Best American Story – where “Fresh Off The Boat” goes up against…“Moonlight.” There are some good intentions in the revamp, but it all feels slightly messy. Then again, do any of the winners take these honors seriously? You’d think they would, as the telecast gets ready for its 25th anniversary. These changes obviously won’t necessarily help the perception that it’s all just an excuse to promote the summer movie season (oh, wait, just realized that huh?).

Moreover, from a technical standpoint it’s hard to see how the show announces all these winners in a two-hour time frame. The telecast will return to a live broadcast after being taped last year, but MTV is not expanding the actual length of the show. With host Adam Devine already at work writing sketches and the expected announcement of at least two live performers, that means a good chunk of these 16 awards will be mailed to the winners afterward.
The 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards will air live on May 7 at 8 PM from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. You can vote on the nominees (at some point) here.
