This weekend, Netflix unveiled their most expensive series ever, “The Get Down.” Baz Luhrmann‘s look at the rising era of disco, soul and hip-hop in ’70s New York City was a messy production that went through two showrunners, among other things, and the result is something that, for better or worse, is totally Baz. Which means there’s a lot of razzle and dazzle, and of course, a hot soundtrack.
Running twenty-f0ur tracks strong, the release seems to run heavy on new jams and lighter on vintage tunes, so your mileage may vary. That said, the talent is strong with nouveau soul singer Leon Bridges, jazz sensation Kamasi Washington, future soul artist Janelle Monae and more kicking out the jams. Certainly, money was spent on “The Get Down,” and there wasn’t any skimping on the soundtrack.
