The canon of latter day Woody Allen movies can sometimes be a crapshoot — for every “Midnight In Paris” there tends to be a “To Rome With Love” not far behind. But the director seems to have found his stride in his latest, “Café Society.” While it’ll never be mistaken for Allen’s top tier works, our review from Cannes declares it’s “his most charming [film] in years,” which should be a strong enough endorsement to get folks to buy a ticket.

But if more persuasion is needed, then perhaps the cast will be the allure, with Allen once again rounding up a strong ensemble of talent including Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Blake Lively, Corey Stoll, Parker Posey, and more in the Old Hollywood set tale about a young man rubbing elbows with the movers and shakers in the movie business. Here’s the official synopsis:
Set in the 1930s, Woody Allen’s bittersweet romance CAFÉ SOCIETY follows Bronx-born Bobby Dorfman (Jesse Eisenberg) to Hollywood, where he falls in love, and back to New York, where he is swept up in the vibrant world of high society nightclub life. With CAFÉ SOCIETY, Woody Allen conjures up a 1930s world that has passed to tell a deeply romantic tale of dreams that never die.
“Café Society” opens on July 15th. Check out a batch of new images below.
