The massive bestseller “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” is finally coming to the big screen (well, actually, any screen…) thanks to the efforts of director Ron Howard, who has been attached for over two years to the film. But now, progress is being made, as the director has brought on two of the best actors working today, Amy Adams and Glenn Close, to star in the film.
Deadline is reporting that Close joins Adams in the upcoming adaptation of the memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” directed by Ron Howard and written by Vanessa Taylor, who was nominated for an Oscar for her most recent script, “The Shape of Water.” The film tells the story of author J.D. Vance, who grew up surrounded by poverty and “hillbillies.” He documented his family’s struggle, and the community’s at large, due to drugs, crime, and economic challenges.

At this point, everyone knows who Glenn Close and Amy Adams are, but if you’ve just woken up from a 40-year coma, then here’s a quick refresher. Close is the legendary actress who has been nominated for seven Oscars, including her most recent loss at this year’s ceremony for her performance in “The Wife.”
Adams has been almost equally as successful, landing a total of six Oscar nominations and nary a win. She was also nominated this year for her work in the film “Vice.” Previously, she’s been seen in films like “Arrival,” “American Hustle,” “The Fighter,” and “The Master.”
Basically, Howard has put two of the most revered actresses in the world together, and perhaps, with their acting powers combined, they can figure out an Oscar win. But that leads to the next point – “Hillbilly Elegy” is yet another major film being distributed by Netflix.

The streaming service won a huge bidding war for the project, reportedly putting down $45 million to buy the rights to the film. ‘Elegy’ joins a long list of high-profile films being developed by Netflix that would normally be easy Oscar contenders, but with the current state of the industry, who knows what will happen?
There’s no release date set for the film, but we’ll definitely keep an eye out for more news on this one.
