The film follows Eleanor, a young fairy godmother-in-training who decides to persuade the world that its inhabitants still need enchanted guidance when she finds out that her chosen career faces termination. After she finds a letter from a distressed 10-year-old named Mackenzie, Eleanor determines to help her out. However, when Eleanor tracks Mackenzie down in Boston, she discovers that she is now a single mother in her forties who works at a news station.
