Golden Globe Snubs 2009: 'The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button,' 'Milk,' & 'Frost/Nixon' Totally Shut Out

The 2009 Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globes aired last night and Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” cleaned up almost every motion picture award. The praise and credit for ‘Slumdog’ is well-deserved, but the domination was bound to leave other films leaving empty handed. So just in case you missed last-nights awesome live-blogging, here is the rundown on who was left out in the cold by those foreign assholes.

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
Nominated for five awards (tied with “Doubt” and “Frost/Nixon” for the most nods), the David Fincher-directed won a grand total of zero awards. The only category we felt the film possibly deserved an award in was Best Original Score, since Alexandre Desplat’s sonorous lullabies were much more magical than the actual movie.

Sean Penn In “Milk”
After Gus Van Sant failed to score a directing nod for the critically acclaimed “Milk,” Sean Penn was overtaken by Mickey Rourke’s performance in “The Wrestler.” Penn was “Milk”‘s single nomination, and so the highly touted film left last night without a single award.

“Frost/Nixon”
Ron Howard’s surprisingly engaging drama was turned away with no awards, after being nominated in five categories. We normally considered Ron Howard to be the king of expendable, bland cinema, but watching “Frost/Nixon” get pounded last night made us feel just a little bit sorry for the guy.

“Doubt”
Also nominated for five awards, “Doubt” came away last night with nothing to show for it. In addition to being nominated for John Patrick Shanley’s Screenplay it had four actors up for nominations. Meryl Streep was snubbed for the Best Performance by an Actress, Amy Adams and Viola Davis were both beaten in the Best Supporting Actress category by Kate Winslet and Phillip Seymour Hoffman was overtaken by Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor.

“The Cast Of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”
Even though the film won Best Comedy, the Rebecca Hall, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz (who seemed to be a lock) acting trifecta was shut out in their respective acting categories.

“Tropic Thunder”
Besides being shutout of a Best Comedy nom, Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise were thankfully sent home without a win in the Best Supporting Actor category.

“I’ve Loved You So Long”
Kristin Scott Thomas was bested in the Best Actress Category by Kate Winslet (at least it wasn’t Anne Hathaway), and the film was outvoted by “Waltz With Bashir” for Best Foreign Language Film, sadly sending the film away with no award love.

Leonardo DiCaprio And Sam Mendes For “Revolutionary Road”
Despite turning in one of his best performance of his long career, Dicaprio was snubbed in the Best Actor category and Sam Mendes was snubbed for the Best Director award, which just added to the bad breaks ‘Road’ has taken so far this awards season (aside from Winslet’s Best Acting win last evening of course).

“The Reader”
Outside of being one of the films Kate Winslet won an award for, (Best Supporting Actress), “The Reader” came away with no other additional awards. It’s as if the Hollywood Foreign Press only loves Kate and not the films she actually stars in.

Is all this a precursor to Oscar? Nothing is set in stone obviously, but we hope this does set the tone for “Slumdog Millionaire.”
