Golden Globes Announces Coronavirus Exception, Is Oscar Next?

The theatrical distribution business has come to a halt in most of the world and it looks like it may be at least another month, at the earliest, till the situation looks anywhere close to “normal.” Many films have pushed their release dates, but a few have jumped to a straight to digital release. Knowing this is a complex situation when it comes to year-end awards qualifying, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association became the first organization to set announce new qualifying rules for films expected to release during the coronavirus pandemic. Yep, the Golden Globes took the jump first.

In a formal release, the HFPA has modified its rules provisionally. Previously, an English-language film was required to have as screening arranged for all members of the HFPA in a theater in the greater Los Angeles area before or at least one week after its theatrical release. Now, due to the epidemic, distributors must contact the HFPA to set up a screening on their official calendar. This must be done at least one week after its release. Additionally, “by that date, distributors must provide all HFPA members with a screening link or a DVD copy of the motion picture so that members may view it at home.  This alternate screening procedure is in effect from March 15 until April 30, 2020, with this period subject to later review and extension.”

Obviously, with movie theaters closed the HFPA have had to also make the following change:

“Motion pictures that had a bona fide theatrical release planned to begin in Los Angeles during the period from March 15 to April 30, 2020 (this period is subject to later review and extension) may instead be released first on a television format (e.g. subscription streaming service, subscription cable channel, broadcast television, etc.) and will still be eligible for the Golden Globe motion picture awards.  (Motion pictures also may continue to be released on pay-per-view cable or digital delivery.)  The HFPA’s reminders list committee will consider the application of this suspension of the rules on a case-by-case basis when compiling the annual Golden Globe reminders list in the fall.”

This means films such as “Trolls World Tour,” which could qualify for Best Animated Film or Best Original Song, would not be ineligible after distributor Universal Studios decided to go a straight to digital release on April 10.

What the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will do in regards to the Academy Awards remains unclear. In a statement earlier this month, AMPAS noted, ““We are in the process of evaluating all aspects of this uncertain landscape and what changes may need to be made. We are committed to being nimble and forward-thinking as we discuss what is best for the future of the industry and will make further announcements in the coming days.”

The difference between the Globes and Oscars is primarily in the documentary category. Docs that were scheduled for theatrical release or their one-week qualifying run may be unable to do so because of previously committed streaming or television arrangements. It’s likely the Documentary branch will also come up with a similar waiver for this period.

The telecast date for 2021 Golden Globes have not been announced, but most believe it will be on Jan. 10, 2021.
