Italian director Matteo Garrone made a big wave in 2008 with his crackling, layered gangster epic “Gomorrah,” which earned the support of Martin Scorsese and wound up with a Criterion Collection edition as well. Not too shabby at all. Well, for his next film, he’s turned his eye from crime to the media.
According to Cineurope, the helmer has started work on “Big House.” Starring Aniello Arena and Loredana Simioli, the film written by Garrone, Ugo Chiti and Massimo Gaudioso will focus on “the TV industry, reality shows and the illusions of notoriety.”
The film has begun an 11 week shoot in Rome and Naples, and while no release date has been set, this looks to be an easy entry for the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. If you’ll remember, Garrone took home the Special Grand Prix from the fest in 2008 for “Gomorrah” pretty much ensuring his next effort will be welcomed with open arms.
