Remember “Gommorah,” the Cannes-winning drama, we saw at TIFF that takes a raw look at corruption and crime in Italy and specifically the Cammora mafia in Naples? As we wrote in our review, ” Such an disquieting and trenchant look was the [original] non-fiction novel that [the movie is based on], its author Roberto Saviano had to go into hiding and is still apparently accompanied by armed guards wherever he goes.”
Well, the movie and its success has obviously brought international attention to the book and this mafia family, so the Cammora has a new Christmas wish: They want Saviano dead by by Christmas. Meanwhile, “Gommorah” (or just “Gomorra” in Italian) director Mattaeo Garrone is wisely not saying word one cause he surely doesn’t want this fatwa on his head. We’d be nervously whistling and walking out of the room too. Saviano is apparently under 24-hour police watch. [Reuters]
