In the rotating cycle of raging showbiz personas, Charlie Sheen has outshone Mel Gibson and Alec Baldwin by not only shouting incoherently at things, but also expressing himself to the attention of 4.53 million viewers. After pulling in those numbers — the largest audience for a primetime sitcom ever (round of applause) — FX's “Anger Management” has become the network's newest ratings darling, and they've reacted accordingly with a massive extension for the next few years.
The cable channel recently announced plans for ninety more episodes of “Anger Management” to air through September 2014, as well as branching the Bruce Helford-created sitcom out for even more cash with syndication. “Charlie Sheen and the entire cast did an amazing job in the first ten episodes, which were produced in a very tight window,” said FX's Executive Vice-President Chuck Saftler. “I have no doubt that the producers and cast will be able to pull off the Herculean task of producing 90 episodes over the next two years.”
The first season, which had its finale on August 23rd, followed Sheen as Charlie Goodson, an anger management therapist who grapples hilariously with the irony that he himself has rage issues, and the new season will also presumably bring Selma Blair, Shawnee Smith, Daniela Bobadilla, and Michael Arden back on as the supporting cast. It was also revealed recently that Martin Sheen would join the production as — who else — Charlie's father, perhaps so they can express their appreciation for one another's “Wall Street” performance once more. A possibility, but in reality the new season already has a chunk of scripts ready to shoot, and a viewing audience apparently ready for ninety more extensions onto Charlie Sheen's bill of public exposure.
