We thought the film version of Dungeons and Dragons might be the last time Hollywood looked to role playing games for awhile, but if there’s anyone who can bring RPGs (Role Playing Games) to the masses, surely it is the man who helped turn a Disney ride into a billion dollar franchise.
Variety reports that Gore Verbinski (‘The Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Extra Nacho Cheese franchise)will direct and co-produce an adaptation of a 2007 Wall Street Journal article on the subject. But in a bit of a twist for him, the article detailed how online role playing games can sometimes have a quite negative impact on the people who play them. The movie will be scripted by Steven Knight. In other words, if you play to many RPGs all the time you will never get laid and will also be a loser. We’re pretty sure that’s the negative effect they’re talking about.
And yeah, that’s about it, according to the trade, the Wall Street Journal article “focuses on a married man who spends as many as 20 hours a day on a computer, existing through an avatar who is a thriving, musclebound entrepreneur. In reality, he is a diabetic, chain-smoking 53-year-old.”
Perhaps trying to mollify gamers, Verbinski is also helming an adaptation of the video game “Bioshock”. Or maybe he’s trying to say first person shooters are OK and role playing games are not. Can’t imagine the Internet would want to weigh in on that or anything. – Jared Weiss
