Though the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions are starting to ease up in some territories, the entertainment industry is still mostly at a standstill. Theaters across the globe have ceased operations, and film and TV productions have halted all over the world. This has forced countless movies to change release dates, with distributors hoping to release their films once things go back to relative normal. The latest victims of release dates being pushed? The latest films by Edgar Wright and David Lowery.
Variety reports that Edgar Wright’s return to horror, “Last Night in Soho,” was pulled off the release schedule by Focus Features. Instead of its original September 25 release date, the psychological horror film will now open sometime in 2021.
The film was rumored to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this month, either out of competition or at a Midnight screening. But the pandemic has affected the film’s post-production, forcing audiences to wait a while longer before they’re able to experience what Anya Taylor-Joy, who stars in the film, described as “a really well-directed acid trip.”
Another film that was supposed to premiere at a film festival earlier this year is David Lowery’s “The Green Knight.” The medieval fantasy film was originally scheduled to have its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival before the event was canceled due to the pandemic, with a theatrical release on May 29. According to Variety, A24 has now delayed the film indefinitely. The film is described as an “epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend” and stars Dev Patel as King Arthur’s reckless nephew, Sir Gawain.
Earlier this month, David Lowery explained that “no one knows” when the film will get released or even if it’s going to go straight to VOD.
