Kevin Smith better watch his back. While he’s still planning his two-part comedy hockey epic “Hit Somebody,” two new “Goon” trailers have arrived and it looks like a hell of a fun time, the rare comedy that can get laughs while presenting psychologically rich characters—and, oh yeah, a lot of blood.
Written by Evan Goldberg (“Superbad,” “Pineapple Express”) and Jay Baruchel, the film is based on the non-fiction book “Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey,” which was written by Doug Smith (with Adam Frattasio) about Smith’s life in minor league hockey.
Seann William Scott plays Doug Glatt (aka Doug Smith), a hockey fan who gets recruited to be a "goon" for a minor league team: his only job is to beat people up. Judging by the trailer, this looks like Scott’s best work, well, ever. Liev Schreiber seems to be playing the mustachioed villain who asks Doug, “You know they just want you to bleed, right?” There are also supporting turns by Baruchel and Eugene Levy, playing it a bit more straight than usual.
Both spots are good, but the red band explains the plot better, gets a bit more potty mouthed of course, and better establishes the rivalry between Schreiber and Scott, which should be a lot of fun. Magnet Releasing (the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures) is behind the picture that looks like it should be appeal well beyond hockey fans and frat boys. Magnet is going with their usual release strategy, placing it On Demand starting February 24th and in theatres March 30th.
