WarnerMedia To Develop New 'Gremlins' Animated Series For Upcoming Streaming Service

It appears that WarnerMedia is set to feed the Mogwai after midnight because “Gremlins” is making a comeback. But not exactly how you might expect.

According to Variety, WarnerMedia is planning to bring the “Gremlins” franchise back to life for its upcoming streaming service, but not as a live-action film. Instead, the horror-comedy franchise is set to return as an animated series. And not just that, it’s a period piece, as well.

The report states that writer and executive producer Tze Chun has been hired to develop and bring “Gremlins” to the streaming service as an animated period piece that will follow the franchise’s Mr. Wing, the elderly Chinese man that is the impetus for the whole franchise kicking off. However, in this series, he’ll be a young man, who goes on adventures with everyone’s favorite Mogwai, Gizmo.

“Gremlins” is, of course, the cult classic film franchise from the ‘80s that spawned two films, directed by Joe Dante. Known for its humor and visual effects, “Gremlins” has lived on in the pop culture lexicon thanks to its famous “rules” and the loveable Gizmo.

Chun is the writer-director behind the 2013 film “Cold Comes the Night,” starring Bryan Cranston. Most recently, however, he has served as a writer on TV series such as “Gotham” and “Once Upon a Time.”

There’s no release date for the series, as development is still in the early stages, but this is one of the first confirmed original projects coming to the unnamed WarnerMedia streaming service. The studio is said to be ready to combine its extensive library of films and TV series, along with an array of new original content, for a service that will rival what Netflix has put together over the last several years.

It’s reported that the initial version of the streaming service will feature the previously released films and TV series, with the brand-new originals coming sometime in 2020.
