Greta Gerwig's 'Little Women' Might Replace Tarantino's 'Once Upon A Time' At Cannes If Needed

Last week, it was revealed that Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” might not be ready in time for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. Deep into post-production, speculation was that the latest from the “Pulp Fiction” director, and Cannes veteran, might only make it into the French festival at the last minute. But now, thanks to a new report, it appears that Sony has a contingency plan if Tarantino can’t debut at Cannes and it involves another high-profile film from an Oscar-nominated director.

Variety is reporting that Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” adaptation is rumored to be Sony’s back-up plan if “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” can’t make it to Cannes. The report says rumors place both “Little Women” and ‘Once Upon a Time’ in post-production at this time, but it would appear that the former is much further along than the latter and would be available to step into the French event if necessary.

Of course, with 2019 marking the 25th anniversary of Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” making its Cannes debut, the obvious choice would be to have the filmmaker premiere his latest. However, it would appear that the film is definitely not going to be ready as part of this week’s official line-up announcement, and will have a tough time being ready for its mid-May debut. However, Gerwig is said to be in post-production, as well, but will be able to make the mid-May deadline, if needed.

Both films have incredible casts, with Tarantino’s featuring Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in starring roles and Gerwig’s featuring Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, and Timothée Chalamet in the cast.

Unfortunately, it appears that we won’t know, for certain, which of the two films will premiere until closer to the official start date of May 14 for the Cannes Film Festival. Either way, it seems like the festival will have one star-studded Sony film debut.
