After two bombs in a row, the 2002 romance stinker with his wife Madonna, “Swept Away,” and the convoluted existentialist caper drama “Revolver” that practically went straight to video, British director Guy Ritchie looks like he’s trying to reclaim former past glories by returning to his roots with the no-nonsense looking “RocknRolla.”
It does look like a rehash of the “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels ” formula – fast-whirling cameras, kinetic action, music-filled crime film – but at this point, we’re pretty sure this is exactly what fans want from Guy Ritchie.
“RocknRolla” is about a… crime caper gone wrong, duh! or “London’s criminal underworld takes notice of a Russian mobster’s shady land deal, a scam that puts millions of dollars up for grabs,” according to IMDB, but more specifically, it appears to be about a priceless multi-million dollar painting owned by a Russian mobster, and sold by a disreputable and presumed dead rock star that puts the story in motion (and of course, someone has got to track it down and retrieve it, right yeah?)
The film also stars Gerard Butler, Thandie Newton, Ludacris, Jeremy Piven, Idris Elba, and Tom Wilkinson.
Interestingly enough “The Wire’s” Idris Elba is mostly absent in this trailer though he’s apparently a major player in the film. The trailer features the Subways‘ “Rock & Roll Queen” which rocks and tumbles in the exact way you’d expect a Guy Ritchie trailer to. “RocknRolla” comes out in theatres October 31 in North America.
