With the still untitled Han Solo spinoff movie now back on track with Ron Howard behind the camera, it seems that the rest of the creative puzzle is being put into place. A composer has been found for the film, and it’s someone new to the “Star Wars” universe.
“The Star Wars Show” reveals that John Powell will tune up the adventures of young Han Solo. The Oscar nominee for “How To Train Your Dragon” has plenty of franchise experience, having scored the original Bourne trilogy, “X-Men 3: The Last Stand,” and other tentpole fare. Powell’s hire is interesting considering his uneasy relationship with action movies in general.

“I’ve been very lucky. I’ve had lots of work and don’t need to worry about money ever again. I was in two minds about ‘Face/Off‘ as to whether it was too violent. I don’t like the glorification of the warrior, this idea that the solution is the strongest man fighting against everyone else. Heroism comes in all sorts of forms. Being the best fighter is just one them,” he told Den Of Geek. “One of the dangerous things you can do is make violence acceptable. However for instance I don’t have a problem with Tarantino films – I have a problem with things like the TV series, ‘The A-Team‘ where people spray bullets at each other. If The ‘A-Team’ had shown the actual results of such carnage, it would have been horrific.
“It’s interesting, this indoctrination that continues to happen in Hollywood. Without screenwriters, none of us would have any work, I should say that first. The second thing that screenwriters need to realise is they need to find some new fucking tricks. It’s not fair that every time you need to move the story forward, you torture somebody,” Powell continued. “But everybody does it. It’s like an expositional technique. Such laziness. So much violence gets into these stories because of formula. ‘Wonder Woman‘ out now and I haven’t seen it yet but I hope that she comes out, rather than kicking everybody’s ass, showing compassion and treating people with logic and reason and empathy.”
I suppose he saw the footage or script for ‘Han Solo’ and thought it was all right. Certainly, Han Solo doesn’t get by on strength, but wits. It’s a pretty interesting hire all around.
The ‘Han Solo’ movie opens on May 25, 2018.
