The upcoming release of “A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas” is putting New Line in the giving spirit early this year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has decided to take ‘Harold & Kumar Christmas’ director Todd Strauss-Schulson up on a pitch for a currently untitled action-comedy. Even better, Strauss-Schulson is set to helm the film as well.
We can only assume that New Line feels as if Strauss-Schulson knows how to bring the funny enough to already give him a second shot, especially considering that the new ‘Harold & Kumar’ flick will mark his feature directing debut. But he’s not a complete neophyte having made his name helming a variety of short films including “Die Hardly Working” and “Mano a Mano” (see both below). Chris Galletta will pen the script for the project, which will be set in Brazil with a plot that is currently under wraps. Considering the exotic locale, we can only imagine what sort of comedic thrills the pair will cook up. If anything, it continues the nation’s working relationship with Hollywood which has recently seen big productions like “Fast Five” and “Twilight: Breaking Dawn” land on its shores. But let’s just hope this flick isn’t just a more action-heavy variation on “The Hangover Part II.”
Perhaps this is a sign of New Line’s faith in high-concept comedy, and we can only hope/presume the film will go for an R-rating. Considering that New Line’s own R-Rated comedy “Horrible Bosses” has become one in a recent spate of adult comedies to cross the $100 million mark, it’s more than possible they look to continue that trend with the ‘Harold & Kumar’ film, and, hopefully, this one too.
