Harry Potter Triumphs As Mean Girls Is Snubbed At 2018 Tony Awards

The American Theater Wing handed out the 72nd Tony Awards on Sunday night and the big winners were “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” and “The Band’s Visit” taking Best Play and Best Musical respectively.  “Angels in America” and, in a surprise, “Once On This Island” took Best Revival of a Play and Best Revival of a Musical.

In a ceremony hosted by Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” won six honors including Best Direction, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design and Best Costumes in a Play.  “The Band’s Visit” was an even bigger triumph than expected taking 10 Tonys including Direction, Best Original Score, Best Book, Best Leading Actor (Tony Shaloub, his first win for his fourth nod) and Best Leading Actress (Katrina Lenk) in a Musical.

In somewhat of a surprise two Hollywood inspired Musicals, “Frozen” and “Mean Girls” were completely shut out by “The Band’s Visit’s” domination.  Many had expected that “Mean Girls,” at worst, would find Tina Fey taking Best Book of a Musical, but that didn’t come to pass.  The remaining Best Musical nominee, “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical,” took one honor, Best Scenic Design for a Musical.

A number of familiar names took home acting prizes including Andrew Garfield (“Angels in America”) for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play, Nathan Lane (“Angels in America”) for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play (this is Lane’s third Tony Award), Laurie Metcalf (“Three Tall Women”) for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play (her second Tony win in two years) and two-time Oscar winner Glenda Jackson earned her second Tony in the Best Performance for a Lead Actress in a Play, also for “Three Tall Women” (Jackson earned her first nomination in 1965).

Denzel Washington, Mark Rylance, Michael Cera, Amy Schumer and Lauren Ambrose were other notable names nominated this year who didn’t take home a trophy
