While Harvey Weinstein didn’t have such a great morning today, with rising producer Megan Ellison roundly trouncing the awards season veteran with her movies tallying 17 nominations, he’s still likely pleased that the reliable Meryl Streep was once again given a nod, this time for her work in his “August: Osage County.” And now it looks like the pair are lining up their third project together (you forgot about “Music Of The Heart,” didn’t you?), one that will draw no shortage of controversy.
Speaking on “The Howard Stern Show” (via Washington Times/Collider), Weinstein revealed: “I’m going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we’re going to take [gun rights] head-on. And [the NRA is] going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them.” Wow… so what is this project?
Deadline shares that the project is called “The Senator’s Wife” and it will chronicle the NRA’s efforts to defeat legislation introduced following the Aurora and Newtown shootings that would expand background checks on gun buyers. The NRA used a well orchestrated campaign and robocalls to kill the bill, and Harvey wants everyone to see how dirty the tactics President Barack Obama called “intimidation” and “lies” really were.
No word yet on a screenwriter or director, but Harvey sounds fired up and with Streep on board, we’re curious to see who else will want to come along to tell this story.
