It’s far, far too long since Lynne Ramsay had a film on screens — it’s eight years, in fact, since the release of the great “Morvern Callar.” The director spent years developing “The Lovely Bones,” only to be bumped in favor of Peter Jackson, and boy, did that not turn out well. She’s spent the last few years quietly working on an adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s best-selling novel “We Need To Talk About Kevin,” which takes the form of a series of letters from the mother of the perpetrator of a school shooting to her husband.
Tilda Swinton joined the project last year, and is set to play Eva, the central role of the mother, and the project’s been gearing up to shoot early this year. Now, we’ve got a little bit of information on who might be joining her. Hitfix interviewed John C. Reilly at Sundance, in support of the extremely well-reviewed Duplass Brothers comedy “Cyrus,” and halfway through the interview, Tilda Swinton walked in the room, leading Reilly to go and talk to her for a few moments. On returning, the actor told the site that “She and I are doing a movie together soon.”
We’re filling in a few gaps, but it sounds a lot like Reilly may be on board the Ramsay project. Swinton doesn’t have anything lined up other than “We Need To Talk About Kevin”, and since Reilly wrapped “Cedar Rapids,” and dropped out of the Bruce Willis thriller “Red” (hmmm, in favor of something more substantial perhaps?), his dance card is currently empty. He’d also be a perfect fit as Eva’s husband Franklin. It’s a supposition at this point, yes, but one that we’re 99% sure about. In which case, one of our most anticipated films of the year just got even more exciting.
Update: Yep, Movieline have confirmed the news – props to them.
