HBO Boss Teases “Stay Tuned” For News On More ‘True Detective’

For years, HBO has been the gold standard as far as prestige TV series goes. The network has won dozens of awards, and TV fans are basically under the assumption that every new show on HBO warrants a watch because it’s probably really great. And over those years, there have been plenty of series that have come and gone, with fans wondering if we’d see more of them. Two of the most asked-about are “Watchmen” and “True Detective.”

Speaking to THR, HBO/HBO Max executive Casey Bloys talked about the possibilities of seeing more from “Watchmen” and “True Detective” in the future. For one of those series, there might be good news coming soon.

When asked about any updates about a possible Season 2 of “Watchmen,” Bloys simply said there’s “no status update” about that project. Fans will remember that after the Emmy-winning first season, showrunner Damon Lindelof said he wasn’t interested in doing more seasons unless someone else came along with a great idea. Well, that great idea seems to be eluding everyone, at this time.

As for another season of “True Detective,” there might be some news forthcoming. When asked about Season 4 of the Emmy-winning crime anthology series, Bloys replied, “On ‘True Detective,’ we’ve been developing various ideas. Stay tuned on that one.”

This seems to echo the reports from early-2021 that said HBO was exploring more seasons of “True Detective” without creator-writer Nic Pizzolatto. Why would they try to forge ahead with the creator of the series? Well, fan reception for “True Detective” has dwindled since the first season, which starred Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. Also, interviews with folks who worked with Pizzolatto have painted the picture of the creator being a bit difficult at times.

So, while we don’t know what shape another season of “True Detective” might take, HBO is apparently actively developing it.
