This weekend, HBO had all kinds of news about their upcoming slate of programming. They confirmed “Game Of Thrones” would finished after season 8, but they were considering the possibility of a spinoff. Meanwhile, they are still kicking the tires on “True Detective” season 3. Right now, the show of the moment on the network is the legal limited series “The Night Of,” which has been earning rave reviews. And it looks like HBO is so happy with the result, they might want a second season.
“We’re thinking about it and if we come up with something we all feel is worthy of doing, we’ll do it,” executive producer, writer and director Steven Zaillian said at the Television Critics Association event. “This was designed as a stand-alone piece. … That being said, there are ways of certainly kind of taking what it feels like and what it’s about and doing another season on another subject.”
Essentially, it sounds like HBO wants to create an anthology type show, not unlike “Fargo” or “American Crime Story.” And frankly, that’s not a bad idea. The current eight-episode run stars John Turturro and Riz Ahmed, and tracks the journey of a young man accused of murder as he navigates the legal system in New York City. And certainly, the premise is broad enough that different kinds of cases and corners of the system could be explored in later seasons.
But for now, it sounds like Zaillian needs to come up with the right idea first, but he’ll definitely have some receptive ears at HBO once he has it. [THR]
