HBO Max Executive Talks ‘Harry Potter’ TV Spinoff & Confirms No Deals Are In Place Yet

A couple of weeks ago, the Wizarding World fandom got riled up when it was reported that WarnerMedia is currently seeking out ways to spinoff the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise into the HBO Max TV series realm. At the time, WarnerMedia didn’t confirm nor deny the report and fans began to speculate what the potential series might look like. Well, HBO/HBO Max boss, Casey Bloys, was recently asked about this at the TCA panel (via THR), and he didn’t give much more information. But he also didn’t deny anything, either.

“I won’t add anything to what you’ve already put out there,” said Bloys about the possible ‘Harry Potter’ spinoff streaming series. “You are correct in that there are no deals in place. I’d would go back to a more global statement on franchises: I think DC, ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Harry Potter’ — Warner Bros. has decades of important IP, ‘Harry Potter’ being one of those. It’s a great advantage for WarnerMedia and of course we want to use them in a way that makes either viewers, subscribers, fans happy.”

When pressed again about any details about the previously-reported Wizarding World spinoff, Bloys simply replied, “I have nothing to add beyond your diligent reporting.”

Read into that what you will, but it’s clear that HBO Max is likely working on some sort of spinoff of “Harry Potter” for the streaming service. And honestly, was that ever in doubt? Sure, the reporting wasn’t concrete and there are no deals in place, as Bloys clarified, but it was really only a matter of time before WarnerMedia went back to the “Harry Potter” well for content.

Though “Fantastic Beasts” isn’t necessarily the acclaimed, fan-favorite franchise that the original ‘Harry Potter’ film series is, the latest features are still profitable and pulling in huge box office for WarnerMedia. And as we’ve seen with Disney and its plan for Disney+, TV spinoffs are the hot ticket right now.
