While “Westworld” is HBO‘s newest massive hit, don’t forget there are still two seasons to come for “Game Of Thrones.” The fantasy series has been nothing short of a phenomenon, and the network has already made clear the door wasn’t closed on a spinoff, and that a prequel is under consideration. Meanwhile, this fall, George R.R. Martin boasted that he had “thousands of pages” of pre-“Game Of Thrones” history lying around that could be used as source material. Still, there are no rash decisions being made about whether or not HBO will have more adventures in Westeros once ‘Thrones’ wraps.
“I would say it’s still kind of preliminary ongoing talks,” HBO Programming President Casey Bloys told EW. “There are areas we are exploring, but I wouldn’t point to any one and say, ‘This is what we’re going to do.’ ”
I have a feeling that’s going to be the official line we’re going to get from HBO in months ahead, as they likely want to keep the focus on wrapping up “Game Of Thrones,” and building the excitement for the grand finale. Still, I wouldn’t rule out the network announcing something perhaps before the eighth and final season, and maybe getting some connective tissue going between “Game Of Thrones” and whatever comes next. But still, that’s just wild speculation on my part. But this is a property that will be expanded upon in some form, and I don’t see a scenario where HBO lets it rest completely.
