Throughout the first season of "True Detective," Matthew McConaughey‘s Rust Cohle articulated his view that the world around him was not worth saving. While it had its dose of humor thanks to a tremendously underrated turn by Woody Harrelson as Rust’s partner and foil, the mystery at the heart of the series only went deeper and darker across its eight episodes. But according to HBO programming director Michael Lombardo, season two will be a bit lighter (relatively speaking, we’d imagine).
“It’s still dark,” Lombardo said at the Edinburgh International Television Festival. “Nic [Pizzolatto] explores the darkness in people’s souls. … It’s not as dark, but it’s not a light ride. Nic likes looking into the crevices of the soul.”
This time around the show will take place in California, with a murder set against the backdrop of a transportation deal. Lombardo confirmed the setting of the show and said that by next summer, we’ll all be glued to our TV sets for the next batch of episodes. "We’re going to start shooting in September for it to air next summer," he said. "[It has] different characters, a different setting. It’s set in California, all of California. There are three cops. One of the characters is female. I think that’s probably all I’m allowed to say. We’ll probably be announcing casting soon."
Among the names mentioned in advance of any official announcement are Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch and Elisabeth Moss, but as of yet, nothing is officially confirmed. [THR/Variety]
