With the success of “Westworld,” HBO finally has another big, culture capturing hit on their hands, but no network wants to rest their success on just one brand. Indeed, “True Detective” looked like it could also act as an ambassador for HBO until that second season fumble, while “The Night Of” has opened another door of opportunity for the network as well, with the critically acclaimed limited series potentially serving as a format for more stories of law and order. And HBO certainly wants more but the message is clear — they are waiting the best material possible.
“I don’t have anything on paper yet but I know there are some ideas going back and forth. I don’t want to rush it. I don’t want to do anything just to get it on the air,” HBO’s Programming President Casey Bloys said at the Television Critics Association about another season of “True Detective.” And that sentiment is echoed when it comes to “The Night Of.”

“[Director] Steve [Zaillian] and [writer] Richard [Price] are throwing around ideas. I’m hopeful they will land on something but one thing I know about them — if they’re not 100% sure about something, they’re going to take their time,” Bloys shared. “I told them we’ll be here when you’re ready. I’m hopeful that they’re getting an idea they’re excited about.”
Meanwhile, even though “Game Of Thrones” is headed toward its final season in 2018, Bloys says the network is continuing to eyeball a possible spinoff.
“All I can say is that we’re exploring it. We don’t have any scripts, we’re not even close to saying ‘Oh let’s do this.’ But it’s a big enough property that we would be foolish not to explore it,” he admitted. “It’s a really rich world. We’d be foolish not to look at it.”
