Helena Bonham Carter To Play Princess Margaret In 'The Crown'

It’s my personal goal in 2018 to make the rest of my The Playlist pals finally watch “The Crown.” Some have wavered a bit, dipping into the second season, but most are put off by the notion of a show about monarchy. Well, the Netflix hit isn’t really about the glory of being royal leaders. Instead, the series dives into the political machinery around Buckingham Palace, and burden of holding the sceptre, in a position that’s often thankless, and filled with one no-win situation after another.

With that defence of the show out of the way, one of the shining stars of the first two seasons has been Vanessa Kirby‘s Princess Margaret. The reckless sister to Queen Elizabeth II loves the luxury of her lifestyle, but faces one heartbreak after another, as the restrictions of being in the royal family devastate her relationships. The actress has been a fiery, unpredictable and often moving presence in “The Crown.” However, with seasons three and four finding new faces for the entire cast as the timeline jumps forward, someone else will need to take the role.

Well, Helena Bonham Carter is the awesome choice for that gig. The actress will play Princess Margaret in the next iteration of “The Crown,” which will see Olivia Colman take the throne as Queen Elizabeth II. It’s a terrific casting choice, and as much as I’m sad to see Claire Foy and company go, it looks like the next round of actors are shaping up to be quite formidable.

No word yet on when “The Crown” season 3 will land, but I’d assume late 2018 at the earliest, but early 2019 as more likely. [Evening Standard]
