Helen Hunt’s Failed ‘Twister’ Sequel Would Have Starred Daveed Diggs & Rafael Casal And Feature Rockets Being Shot At Tornadoes

For many people that are in their 30s (and older), “Twister” holds a special place in their hearts. Sure, the film is ridiculous, but it also has one of the best casts (including a scene-stealing Philip Seymour Hoffman) and some great lines (“‘The Suck Zone.’ It’s the point basically when the twister… sucks you up. That’s not the technical term for it, obviously.”). And with the film’s popularity, you would imagine Hollywood would love the idea of a sequel, especially if Helen Hunt is involved. Well, apparently not.

Speaking on Watch What Happens Live (via Collider), Helen Hunt talked about how she had to basically pester the studio for a meeting for her idea for “Twister 2,” featuring a completely diverse cast. But even with Hunt involved, and a solid cast of people who worked with her on the new “Blindspotting” TV series, it appears no one is ready to spend money on the squeal.

“I tried to get it made,” Hunt explained. “With Daveed [Diggs] and Rafael [Casal] and me writing it, and all Black and brown storm chasers, and they wouldn’t do it. I was going to direct it.”

She later added, “We could barely get a meeting. And this was in June of 2020, when it was all about diversity. And it would have been so cool.”

Hunt goes on to explain the film would take place near Nashville with a rocket science club, which leads to the characters “shooting the rocket into the tornado.”

Alas, it doesn’t appear that a studio is willing to jump onboard a “Twister” sequel, which is shocking. However, if reports from last year are to be believed, perhaps a “Twister” reboot is in the cards. Or maybe, that too is lost.
