“Hellboy 3” is one of those long discussed projects that people seemed more interested to talk about happening, than actually wanting to see happen. Aside from devoted Guillermo del Toro fans and Ron Perlman, I’m not sure the world was waiting with bated breath for the third installment in the series, but if you were, there’s some bad news today.
Del Toro hit Twitter this morning to declare that, now and forever, “Hellboy 3” is dead (and suggests that it’s pointless to keep asking him about it):
Hellboy 3 Sorry to report: Spoke w all parties. Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it
— Guillermo del Toro (@RealGDT) February 21, 2017
This isn’t really a huge surprise for anyone who has even been vaguely following the developments of the project over the years. Back in 2014, del Toro made it clear that getting “Hellboy 3” made was a longshot to begin with, for a variety of reasons.

“It’s very unlikely it’ll happen because you need things to converge so strongly. [Producer] Larry Gordon, Universal, the rights, Ron [Perlman’s] and mine’s availability, [comic creator] Mike [Mingola’s] blessing; we have pieces of that, but we don’t have all of that. You need so many things to confluence and then you need about $150 million,” del Toro said at the time.
It doesn’t seem like much has changed in that regard, and it seems that del Toro has worked every last possibility. It’s time to let this one go.
