Following Marvel’s decision to absorb Marvel TV, the clock has been ticking for all of its television projects. All the Netflix shows (“Iron Fist,” “Daredevil,” etc.), “Cloak & Dagger,” “Ghost Rider,” and “The Runaways” have all been canceled and the entire creative team behind “Tigra & Dazzler” have been fired before the show even started. Yet, Hulu’s upcoming “Helstrom” is one of the few shows that escaped the ax, and is going forward, perhaps because they were too far along in production to halt.

That may be a little too optimistic… more accurately, it may be lucky enough to get one season off before being canceled and right now, and the rumor is the show is dead and one and done.
This horror-themed thriller series is loosely based on the Marvel comic character Daimon Helstrom, who will be played by Tom Austen, and his sister Ana Helstrom (Sydney Lemmon). In the upcoming series, Daimon and Ana are said to be “the son and daughter of a mysterious powerful serial killer.” This is a bit of a shift from the literal Son of Satan, as in the comics.

Despite this dramatic sounding backstory, the first-look photos are mostly just images of people standing around looking dramatic and serious. Given how close the series likely came to being canceled, it makes sense that the cast is looking a little tense.

However, there are still reasons for fans of “Helstrom” to be excited. The “Helstrom” marketing team released a new poster video to promote the upcoming Comic-Con at Home panel. The poster confirms which cast members from “Helstrom” will be in attendance, including lead actors Tom Austen, Sydney Lemmon, and Elizabeth Marvel, who plays Damien and Ana’s mother (and seems particularly great in this).
Whether “Helstrom” will be Marvel TV’s dying breath or a triumphant vestige of that era that endures remains to be seen. Either way, odds are amazing we won’t see much beyond the 10-episode season.
Still, the show is shot and in the can and the first trailer is here. Check out the first “Helstrom” trailer and learn more about the series at the Comic-Con at Home panel on Friday, July 24 at 6:00 PM ET. All episodes premiere October 16, 2020, only on Hulu.
