Henry Cavill Downplays “Frustrating” Superman Rumors But Says He’d “Absolutely Love” To Return

With “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” returning to the spotlight, landing a future release on HBO Max, there seems to be a renewed interest in the fanbase about Henry Cavill returning to the role of Superman in the DCEU. After rumors of him not coming back, followed by other actors’ names popping up and talk of a potential “Supergirl” spin-off, it seemed that Cavill’s days as the Man of Steel were numbered. But now, even more rumors and speculation have appeared saying that he’s definitely coming back. Clearly, there’s just a lot of rumors and very little confirmation from the actor or the studio about what the hell is going on with Superman.

Speaking to Variety, Cavill was asked point-blank about his potential return to the character and what his future in the DCEU might look like. When asked about the deluge of rumors about his return to the DCEU, Cavill played coy, while also seemingly downplaying his future involvement in the superhero universe.

“[The rumors] get wilder and wilder by the day,” he explained. “The amount of speculation, the stuff I read on the Internet, is extraordinary and sometimes frustrating. It’s when you see people stating stuff as fact. Like, ‘No, that’s not the case. That hasn’t happened, and that conversation isn’t happening.’ But the important thing is that people are excited about it, and I think it’s important to be excited about a character like Superman. Superman is a fantastic character. If people are chatting about it, and even if they’re making stuff up, it’s okay, because that means they want to see the character again. And in an ideal world, I would absolutely love to play the character again.”

As mentioned, recent rumors say that Cavill will return, not in a solo film, however. It’s speculated that the actor’s role will be as a supporting player, showing up in other films and perhaps building towards something bigger down the line. But seeing the comments above, it appears that maybe Cavill isn’t that close to returning but he’s just happy people are talking about the possibility.

Either way, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens, as Warner Bros. continues to figure out how to move forward with its fractured film continuity. Maybe he’ll show up alongside Michael Keaton in ‘Flash?’
