In a week already filled with DCEU news, it should come as no surprise that Superman himself is getting in on the action. Henry Cavill appears to be far from done with his role as the Man of Steel, despite not having a film in development and years of rumors that he’s done with the role. The actor revealed his thoughts on hanging up the cape during an appearance on Variety’s “Actors on Actors.” For the video, he was paired with sci-fi icon Patrick Stewart to discuss a range of topics, including their roles in fandom.

During the wide-reaching conversation, Cavill was quick to show his remaining devotion towards holding on to the coveted title and his love of what it means to play one of the most recognizable superheroes in the world.
“I’ve always been a fan of Superman, With a character like that, you carry the mantle with you off set. And it becomes part of your public representation,” the actor said. “When you meet children, children don’t necessarily see me as Henry Cavill, but they might see Superman, and there’s a responsibility which comes with that. Because it’s such a wonderful character, it’s actually a responsibility I’m happy to have, and I hope that I get to play more of Superman in years to come.”
The push for “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” release along with the recent news that it will come to HBO Max in “early-to-mid” 2021 could be a factor in Cavill’s candidness. With fans seemingly desperate to see what the filmmaker had in mind with his vision of the team-up film, there’s renewed interest in seeing more of Cavill as Superman.
“I think it’s important for a filmmaker and a storyteller to have their intended vision released and shown to the world, and I’m looking forward to seeing it myself. It’s been quite the ordeal,” Cavill said of the upcoming release.
If anything, the Snyder Cut could provide a glimpse of where the director saw this legendary character going in future films. No doubt, the film’s success could have given Cavill new life as the character.
Going forward with the role of Superman may offer its own challenges for Cavill. With this week’s news of Michael Keaton returning to play Batman in the DCEU, the Kryptonian legend has remained on the sidelines. Leaving him out of his own standalone franchise could create a scenario where Cavill assumes the role in various other DC projects. For now, it appears that Superman may be limited to short appearances and cameos in upcoming DC films.
But at least fans know that Cavill seems far from done with the character.
