Hot on the heels of the official teaser comes a full trailer for HBO’s highly anticipated fantasy series, “His Dark Materials.” Based on Philip Pullman‘s wildly popular book trilogy of the same name, “His Dark Materials” follows Lyra Belacqua (“Logan” star Dafne Keen) as she travels across a multiverse fraught with danger, daemons, and Dust (explained below). The show’s premiere is predicted to rival the success of the recently-ended “Game of Thrones.” The first series finished filming in December 2018 and will premiere later in 2019. The series boasts an all-star cast featuring Keen, James McAvoy, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ruth Wilson, and Clark Peters. Tom Hooper directs, with Jack Thorne, the playwright behind “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” serving as the show’s writer. New Line Cinema is producing while HBO and BBC One are distributing in the United States and the UK, respectively. HBO will oversee international distribution.

Pullman’s universe brims with originality, integrating themes and ideas that have riled up Christians since the books’ initial publications. Daemons, a creature, and concept featured prominently in the books, are, quite literally, spirit animals who must remain in close proximity to their human companions. Dust, another fascinating concept straight from Pullman’s brilliant brain, has been called many things by many different people. The books equate it to dark matter. Pullman himself, betraying hints of the profundity that characterizes much of his work, goes a bit deeper with his description. In 2017, The Guardian published an article that quoted Pullman as saying, “Dust is an analogy of consciousness, and consciousness is this extraordinary property we have as human beings.”
No official release date has been announced, but HBO says the series is coming Fall 2019 in this video. Watch the new Comic-Con trailer below.
