'Hobbs & Shaw' Director David Leitch Reveals An Alternate Opening & How He Landed That Scene Stealing Cameo [The Fourth Wall]

Welcome to the Episode 3 of The Fourth Wall – an interview podcast where I attempt to break down the fourth wall of the film industry, getting a behind the scenes look through my conversations with filmmakers, actors/actresses, and other industry professionals. My guest today is “Hobbs & Shaw” director David Leitch.

Leitch has been the stunt double for Brad Pitt and Jean-Claude Van Damm, and his stunt credits span across a multitude of films including “The Matrix” trilogy and “V for Vendetta.” He was a co-director on 2014’s “John Wick” and the man behind films such as “Atomic Blonde” and “Deadpool 2.” Taking his action sensibilities to the “Fast & Furious” franchise, “Hobbs & Shaw” offers some of the most heightened, yet practical set pieces the series has seen thus far. The best part is that madness was encouraged and shows just how well Leitch and the rest of the team understand their audience.

“There was always this encouragement from the studio and Chris [Morgan]. The ‘Fast’ audience loves bigger so go for it, go for it, go for it,” said Leitch. ” It might be a little bit more heightened than I normally would do, but I think for the ‘Fast’ fans, and in this world, we wanted to make some bold choices and do some crazy things that can be memorable. I’ve never not succeeded by going big [laughs].”

During my conversation with David, we not only discussed going bigger, but he breaks down the film’s climactic action set piece, reveals an alternate opening, talks some scene-stealing cameos and much more!
