'Homecoming' Trailer: Julia Roberts Stars In 'Mr. Robot' Creator's Latest Psychological Thriller Series

With “Mr. Robot,” creator Sam Esmail has proven himself to be one of the most capable people in the TV industry at telling a gripping psychological thriller. Let’s hand it to him because Esmail took a story about a hacker with severe mental issues and turned it into one of the most talked-about shows on television. Well, now Esmail is hoping to do the same thing with his upcoming Amazon series, “Homecoming,” and judging by the first trailer, we’d have to say that it appears the writer-director has another hit on his hands.

“Homecoming” stars Academy Award-winning actress Julia Roberts as a caseworker at the mysterious Homecoming Transitional Support Center. While the new trailer doesn’t give too many of the specific plot points away, it’s clear that the things going on at this support center are not all they’re cracked up to be, as patients begin to question what is actually going on and Roberts’ character joins them in their suspicions.

Esmail writes and directs each episode of “Homecoming” and it’s clear. The style is very reminiscent of “Mr. Robot,” with its muted palette and intricate David Fincher-esque shots. It’ll be interesting to see what the show’s creator has up his sleeve with his latest series.

Joining Roberts in the cast are Jeremy Allen White, Alex Karpovsky, Dermot Mulroney, Stephan James, and Bobby Cannavale.

“Homecoming” will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on November 2.

Here’s the synopsis for the series:

HOMECOMING is a mind-bending psychological thriller starring Julia Roberts and directed by Sam Esmail (creator of MR. ROBOT). Heidi Bergman (Roberts) is a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a Geist Group facility helping soldiers transition back to civilian life. Walter Cruz (Stephan James) is one of these soldiers, eager to begin the next phase of his life. Overseeing Heidi and the facility is Colin Belfast (Bobby Cannavale), an ambitious company man whose manic demands point to questionable motives. Four years later, Heidi has started a new life, living with her mother (Sissy Spacek) and working as a small-town waitress, when a Department of Defense auditor (Shea Whigham) comes to her with questions about why she left the Homecoming facility. Heidi begins to realize that there’s a whole other story behind the story she’s been telling herself.
