'Homecoming' Trailer: Julia Roberts Helps Soldiers Transition To Civilian Life In New Psychological Thriller Series

If someone told Julia Roberts, at the height of her “Erin Brockovich” run, that she would eventually star on a web series for a company that shipped toilet paper, she would have laughed. But alas, we are in the Golden Age of TV and 18 years after her Oscar-winning performance in the aforementioned film, Roberts is set to headline a new series for Amazon called “Homecoming.”

The trailers and marketing materials have been very mysterious surrounding the psychological thriller series from the creator of “Mr. Robot,” Sam Esmail. In the latest trailer, however, we get our best look yet at what is shaping up to be a unique and interesting addition to the ever-growing library at Amazon. Roberts plays a caseworker named Heidi Bergman for a rehabilitation facility called Homecoming. There, she helps returning soldiers adjust to the real world. However, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill rehab. Through the use of odd camera angles and creepy music, it’s clear that Esmail is alluding to something more sinister under the surface.

The series is based on the podcast of the same name (yes, we are at the point of multiple TV series and films based on podcasts) and is created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, who also co-write the series together. As mentioned, Esmail is on board to direct and produce the entire series. Roberts is joined by a great cast, including Shea Whigham, Bobby Cannavale, Dermott Mulroney, and Sissy Spacek.

Amazon is releasing “Homecoming” on November 2.

Here’s the synopsis:

Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts) is a caseworker at Homecoming, a Geist Group facility helping soldiers transition to civilian life. Years later she has started a new life, living with her mother and working as a waitress, when a Department of Defense auditor questions why she left the Homecoming facility. Heidi quickly realizes that there’s a whole other story behind the story she’s been telling herself.
