There are no middling opinions when it comes to The Wachowskis‘ "Cloud Atlas." It was named the worst movie of 2012 by both the Village Voice and Time, while the film’s European distributor said it was "too intellectual" for audiences. Indeed, the star-studded film, produced on a $100 million budget (not counting marketing), only earned $130 million worldwide, which is not the kind of result you want when spending that kind of money. But Hugh Grant, who stepped well outside his comfort zone and took six roles in the time jumping narrative, is disappointed the movie didn’t catch on.
”I thought [‘Cloud Atlas’] was amazing,” he told Yahoo. “[The Wachowskis’] are the bravest film-makers in the world, and I think it’s an amazing film…it’s frustrating to me. Every time I’ve done something outside the genre of light comedy, the film fails to find an audience at the box office. And, sadly, ‘Cloud Atlas’ never really found the audience it deserved.”
It’s a bummer result for an actor who has grown increasingly bored and disillusioned by his chosen profession. “I’m not out there looking for films. On the whole, I’m out of show business,” Grant claimed, once again playing the familiar notes he has in the past, that the job is no fun. “It’s miserable. It’s a very cruel world, no-one should go into it. I’m always getting cousins and friends, and daughters and sons of friends…wanting to talk about going into acting and I always say just don’t do it at all. It’s brutal.” Don’t hold onto those dreams, kids.
As for Grant, who is totally done with the biz, he’s got "The Rewrite" arriving this month in the U.K., "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." coming in 2015, and says he has a new project lined up to shoot next spring (nope, it’s a not a romantic comedy). It must be a total drag for him.
