Across eight seasons, Hugh Laurie turned in a two-time Golden Globe winning performance as Dr. Gregory House on the hit series “House,” and while the actor has dipped his toes in feature films across the years, television has continued to be very good to the thespian. He’s had an arc on the HBO comedy “Veep,” and this year played opposite Tom Hiddleston in the acclaimed limited series “The Night Manager.” Now, Laurie is headed to Hulu for what looks like another promising venture.

Executive produced by “Room” director Lenny Abrahamson, who also helms multiple episodes, “Chance” sees Laurie getting doctorly again, this time as Dr. Eldon Chance, a forensic neuropsychiatrist who becomes the target of an abusive spouse of one of his patients, who may or may not have multiple personality order. And that spouse also happens to be a cop. Yikes. Here’s the official synopsis:
Based on the acclaimed novel by Kem Nunn, “Chance” is a provocative, psychological thriller that focuses on Dr. Eldon Chance (Laurie), a San Francisco-based forensic neuropsychiatrist who reluctantly gets sucked into a violent and dangerous world of mistaken identity, police corruption and mental illness. After an ill-advised decision regarding an alluring patient who may or may not be struggling with a multiple personality disorder, Dr. Chance finds himself in the crosshairs of her abusive spouse, who also happens to be a ruthless police detective. In over his head, Dr. Chance’s descent into the city’s wayward underbelly, all while navigating the waters of a contentious divorce and tribulations of his teenage daughter, soon spirals into an ever deepening exploration of one of mankind’s final frontiers — the shadowy, undiscovered country of the human mind.
“Chance” already has a two-season order at Hulu, and will debut on October 19th.
