'I Am Mother' Trailer: Hilary Swank Takes On An Evil Robot Mother In New Netflix Thriller

For decades now, film fans have been conditioned to understand that robots are evil. Pure and simple. The second that some human gives artificial intelligence and sentience to a robot, we’re all doomed. “The Terminator,” “I, Robot,” and “Prometheus” are just a few examples that show that AI-infused robots will be the death of everything. And now, Netflix reinforces that idea with its upcoming sci-fi/thriller “I am Mother.”

In the first trailer, we see that robots could actually be sweet. Mother, with her sweet, loving voice (courtesy of Rose Byrne), raises a human daughter to be strong and smart, but isolated from the post-apocalyptic world outside their door. But then when a stranger breaches their security, Mother and Daughter must deal with the knowledge she brings, as well as figure out if the sweet, kind robot isn’t hiding a dark secret.

“I am Mother” debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and our reviewer was able to take a gander. Our review said the film is “pretty slick” without the big budget these films normally call for. And as for the acting, the review says, “[Clara] Rugaard is a captivating talent that should get a lot more attention in Hollywood and [Hilary] Swank once again reminds everyone why she’s a two-time Oscar winner.”

“I am Mother” arrives on Netflix on June 7.

Here’s the synopsis:

I AM MOTHER is a sci-fi thriller about a teenage girl (Clara Rugaard), who is the first of a new generation of humans to be raised by Mother (Rose Byrne), a robot designed to repopulate the earth after the extinction of humankind. But the pair’s unique relationship is threatened when an injured stranger (Hilary Swank) arrives with news that calls into question everything Daughter has been told about the outside world and her Mother’s intentions.
