Of all the Judd Apatow-like films that hit the market after the all-around writer-director-producer made a splash in 2007 with "Knocked Up," few were as enjoyable as writer-director John Hamburg's "I Love You, Man." Sure, it did little to distance itself from the Apatow brand by cribbing two of Apatow's go-to men, Jason Segel and Paul Rudd, but it was a sweet-hearted and hilarious bromance that nearly made any hint that it was abiding to a strict comedic success formula vanish.
Well it's nice to see Hamburg may be onto something else now, as he hasn't done much by way of directing since that film's release in 2009 — with the exception of a few episodes of the hit Zooey Deschanel-starring series "The New Girl" — but now THR is reporting Hamburg is in negotiations with 20th Century Fox to write and director the comedy "Brother From Another Mother." Picked up in turnaround from DreamWorks, the film is set to play pretty close to the bromance formula Hamburg is accustomed to, as it follows two estranged brothers who are thrown together on a road trip and must sort out their difference as one is brilliant and directionless — while the other is simply a precocious and sheltered teen. (The pair share the same father, as indicated by the title.) Some sort of situation will go awry, making sure hilarity ensues.
Like we said, Hamburg clearly knows how to utilize a formula, and creating a hybrid road movie/bromance comedy could be just the trick to give this conceit a fresh spin, so we're willing to give it a shot. No word on when this one will get rolling, but we're certainly interested to see what kind of comedic talent he'll line up.
