Ah yes, the reaction that launched an unforgettable meme, that, last the world knew about Ben Affleck and “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” he was super-bummed to hear that the critics didn’t dig Zack Snyder‘s frown-a-thon. But the actor is still committed to DC Films (coming soon: “The Batman“), and now that a few months have passed, he’s given a more elaborate assessment of ‘Dawn Of Justice’ — and guess what? For him, it worked.
“I loved it,” Affleck shared with Kevin McCarthy. “It’s the biggest hit of my career and had a lot of editorial negativity….It was interesting, that movie, because it was judged not necessarily on execution so much as its tone.”
Perhaps Affleck wasn’t reading those reviews too closely, because it wasn’t just the tone of the movie that was criticized, but the narrative messiness, lack of craft…you name it, Snyder probably bungled it. But the actor stands by his director and the approach to the material.
“Some people, people seemed to want to have a lighter tone to the movie, and I thought that was interesting because that’s subjective. Tone isn’t like a qualitative thing, it’s subjective, right?” Affleck said. “Some tones resonate with me and might not with you. And the tone of the movie was really parallel to the Frank Miller book, which I liked and thought was great. I’m glad that so many people went and so many people liked the movie and it worked out.”
Different strokes for different folks, as Affleck says. Thoughts? Let us know what you think below, but let’s hope he doesn’t take the completely grim and sour vibe for his solo outing as Batman. [THR]
