Quentin Tarantino’s adoring commitment to trash extends beyond bad, B-movie grindhouse crap, it even goes so far into the realm of bad television (he’s evinced his love for bad Movies of the Week many times). But even beyond bad television, it extends to bad reality TV and none other than the bane of pop cultural existence “American Idol.”
The filmmaker has already appeared on ‘Idol’ once (back in 2007 – clip below, god dude was so sadly in his element) and he’s scheduled to take a break from editing his upcoming WWII epic, “Inglourious Basterds” to make another appearance on the musical amateur karaoke show this week (tomorrow to be exact according to Hitflix).
Tarantino and his longtime editor Sally Menke have been furiously working for the last few months on ‘Basterds’ to have the film ready for its debut at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in May, which, apparently, is a sure thing according to recent reports.
The idol theme tmw is “Idols at the Movies” and apparently he won’t be a judge this time, but a mentor. We can just see it now, Tarantino mentoring some kid and trying to coach him/her: “No, no, no. Think more Tallulah Bankhead as if she were playing Petula Clark, right?”
Blank stares….
We suppose we’re fine with Quentin having his trash fun, but if this does happen to delay ‘Basterds,’ or if other extraneous reasons surfaced that prevented the film from appearing at Cannes, you know fans and the French will be eyeing Simon and co. with dagger stares and shouting for blood.
