Following up from their double hit yesterday, IFC Films have acquired U.S. rights to Abbas Kiarostami’s “Certified Copy” from its run at the Cannes Film Festival.
Starring Juliette Binoche and William Shimell in what are described as tour-de-force performances, the film is a character study of two people on a date in Italy who, as it’s gradually revealed, share a past that runs very deep.
Our Cannes review noted that the chemistry between the film’s leads is “bristling, honest and real,” and the film boasts dialogue that comes across with “a raw realism that is breathtaking,” ultimately making for a “funny and moving, intellectually absorbing and emotionally rich” effort from Kiarostami that should reach out to audiences far and wide.
IFC’s Jonathan Sehring agrees, calling the film “the discovery of the Cannes Film Festival. We are honored to bring what we think will be Abbas Kiarostami’s most successful American release, featuring an absolutely radiant performance by Juliette Binoche, to audiences.” Again, no time frame is given for the film’s potential release.
