Filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard is a legend. No two ways about it. So whenever there’s a new film on the horizon created by the director, we are always excited to see what he has up his sleeve next. Godard’s most recent film, “Le Livre d’image (The Image Book)” has been selected to compete with the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and we finally have our first look.
In a teaser (Vimeo won’t let us embed, so click the link to watch), we’re not really given much information about the film, literally at least. Sounds and clips play in the background as text is flashed on the screen. Names of films, and other creative works, are teased quickly. But ultimately, we don’t get a whole lot of information about the forthcoming “The Image Book.” However, considering this is Godard, did we expect anything less?
Lately, Godard has been pushing the boundaries of his filmmaking. He’s been going even further with his DGAF attitude regarding film. It shouldn’t be a surprise that for a teaser for this long-awaited project, we’re given hardly anything to digest, other than tons of text, sounds, and flashing words. One thing is for sure, this will be a film that will get many people talking.
“The Image Book” has been in production for years, with the sales company for the film saying that the director had been filming for since at least 2015. We were hoping the film would be considered for the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, but obviously, the film wasn’t even close to finished. “Le Livre d’image (The Image Book)” was formerly known as “Image Et Parole” and was described by one person as “a reflection on the Arab world today among other subjects.”
We’re excited to see the film next month when the Cannes Film Festival begins May 8.
